COLUMBUS, Ind. –Columbus Fire Department said a detached garage behind a business at 823 12th St. was destroyed in a fire at 12:17 a.m. Tuesday.
The Beauty Room Salon reported the fire in the garage behind the business, said Capt. Mike Wilson, spokesman for the Columbus Fire Department.
When firefighters arrived, they found the garage in flames and the fire spreading to two privacy fences near the building. Radiant heat from the fire was causing damage to vinyl siding on an adjacent property, Wilson said.
Due to the amount of items inside the garage, the fire was well advanced when firefighters arrived, Wilson said. With signs of structural instability, firefighters did not enter the building during the firefight. The fire consumed a significant amount of the structural building materials, causing the remaining walls and roof structure to collapse. The owner told firefighters that the garage was used to store property.
The cause of the fire is under investigation. The damage caused by the fire is estimated at approximately $30,000. The garage is considered a total loss. No injuries were reported at the scene, Wilson said.
