Autumn Merrick, killed in downtown Minneapolis shooting, honored by youth-run bakery she helped found – WCCO
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – So much potential, snatched away in the blink of an eye. Autumn Merrick was killed by stray gunshots as she stopped to catch slush on her way home from work.
Now a group of his friends with Green Garden Bakery , which Merrick helped found, are taking steps to continue his legacy of donation.

“She was small and powerful and she brought so much personality to everything Green Garden Bakery did for the community,” said Elana Dahlberg, Urban Strategies Group.
Merrick and a group of his friends have created urban garden beds, where they grow vegetables to turn them into delicious desserts to sell to the community.
“Fall can’t be physically with us, but that doesn’t mean it can’t be part of Green Garden Bakery,” D’Loveantea Allen said.
Merrick was killed near the North Loop on his scooter ride home from work. She was run over by one of the two vehicles where the people inside were engaged in an on-going shootout.
“So to keep his memory alive in the business, as well as the world, we figured we would name the box after him,” Allen said.
Inside the box is Merrick’s favorite dessert – beetroot brownies. There is also a body scrub created especially for her.
“We named it the Autumn Rose fragrance,” said Kiaree Jackson.
Green Garden Bakery used vanilla, tea tree and geranium oils to create a scent that represents the beauty, strength and vibrancy of fall.

“So we combined these essential oils to create this scent with rose petals and dedicate it to our friend,” Jackson said.
And that’s not all.
The building which the company is managed was bought in 2019 by Merrick and his friends from Green Garden Bakery.
The group names the commercial kitchen Autumn Rose Green Garden Bakery Kitchen.
The hope is that people will feel welcome to visit the kitchen and cafe, engage with young people, and continue to build community, just like Merrick intended.
