“Everything for Marc,” Gigi Hadid captioned a selfie showing her backstage at the Marc Jacobs Fall 2022 show. Of course, like the majority of the models at the New York Public Library presentation on Monday night, she was almost unrecognizable thanks to a set of bleached eyebrows, a prosthetic bald head and a jet black graphic wig. It was a similar story for Sister Bella, who was an all-new character when she walked the runway with her half-shaved head and a voluminous onyx vinyl ballgown.
As noted vogue Runway’s Nicole Phelps in her review, the shaved sides with bumper bangs are reminiscent of Sean Young’s in the 1982 sci-fi film noir blade runner. The inky cyberpunk cuts, designed by a hairdresser Duffy with the help of a special effects artist Noel Jacoboni, which glued a custom flesh-like bald cap onto each model, was a statement in more ways than one. Most striking: As the Supreme Court apocalyptically suppresses women’s reproductive rights, picking up a pair of clippers and shaving a few strategic inches feels like seductive and expressive liberation. As Jacobs quoted Nietzsche in his show notes: “We have the art of not dying from the truth.”
