Illini men’s golf takes on the southern highlands

LAS VEGAS, NV- The Illinois men’s golf team, ranked No. 19 nationally by Golfstat, returns to the course this week to challenge a formidable course at Southern Highlands Collegiate 2022. The three-day event, hosted by UNLV , will take place from Sunday to Tuesday, from February 27 to March 1.

Southern Highlands Collegiate is housed at Southern Highlands Golf Club in Las Vegas, Nevada. The course, co-designed by the legendary Robert Trent Jones, Sr., and his son Robert Trent Jones, Jr., features the natural beauty of the desert, including mountainous terrain to create sweeping elevation changes, beautiful ponds and waterfalls, deep bunkers and bentgrass greens. The par-72 course spans 7,510 yards.

The 54-hole tournament will be a five-stroke four format played over three days, with 18 holes scheduled for each day of competition. Departure times are set, out of numbers 1 and 10, starting daily at 11:00 a.m. CT / 9:00 a.m. PT.

The field includes 15 of the nation’s top programs vying for the title, highlighted by nine programs ranked in the top 50 by Golfstat. No. 19 Illini is joined by No. 1 Oklahoma, No. 5 Pepperdine, No. 9 Georgia, No. 12 Georgia Tech, No. 15 Texas, No. 24 Florida, No. 29 New -Mexico and No. 35 Northwestern. The rest of the field is made up of UCLA, TCU, SMU and San Diego, along with defending champion Southern California and host UNLV.

The individual champion from Southern Highlands Collegiate will earn a bye into the 2022 Shriners Hospitals for Children Open, which is scheduled for October 6-9, 2022 at TPC Summerlin in Las Vegas.

The Illini have previously competed at Southern Highlands Collegiate five times from 2015-2019. During that streak, the team has finished in the top 10 every year, including the program’s best result at the 2015 event in which the Illini finished sixth behind a sixth-place finish. individual finish at 6 under (210) from then-junior Charlie Danielson. Nick Hardy captured back-to-back individual top-10s at the event with a 10and-final place as a junior in 2017 and a tie for seventh place as a senior in 2018. Michael Feagles was the last Illini to place in the top 10 at Southern Highlands Collegiate, placing sixth at the 2019 event.

Senior Tommy Kuhl is the only member of Illini’s current roster to have previously attended Southern Highlands Collegiate. As a 2019 rookie, Kuhl carded 80-71-76 rounds to finish to finish +11 to tie for 63rd.

The Illini travel to Tucson, Ariz., to play in the University of Arizona National Invitational Tournament at Omni Tucson National Golf Club on March 18-19.
