Why You Should Switch to Vegan Beauty Products

The biggest misconception behind vegan beauty products is the crunchy textures and cheap packaging that comes at the cost of knowing how your makeup is formulated. Luckily, over the past two years, the makeup and skincare industry has gone through huge changes: changing brands and making sure vegan beauty products are better than ever.

What is vegan beauty?

We’ve all heard of “organic” or “green” beauty products being promoted on social media. Vegan, however, is a less ambiguous term that actually has an enduring definition in the beauty industry. In short, this means that the product does not contain any animal by-products or animal-derived ingredients, such as carmine, lanolin, and beeswax. It’s also important to note that cruelty-free does not mean vegan. Rather, it means that the products have not been tested on animals at any stage of the process. A product can be cruelty-free without being vegan and vice versa, so keep that in mind when shopping.

How does vegan makeup and skincare actually help?

Vegan beauty products tend to be eco-friendly. Using natural products is one, and on top of that, most vegan beauty product containers are usually recyclable and eco-friendly. This also applies to cruelty-free products. Most of us don’t keep the boxes we put on our makeup in, and recyclable packaging is definitely a good option to reduce waste.

What’s in it for me?

Vegan makeup products are not just a way to help with the dumping crisis, but can help your skin in some cases. Normal cosmetics contain very strange ingredients such as extracts from dead insects and other acids from animals.

Some of the ingredients found in vegan cosmetics include aloe vera, chamomile, and glycerin.

These ingredients aren’t too harsh on the skin and let you know exactly what you’re applying. Vegan cosmetics have been shown to be better for those with sensitive skin because they are made with fewer ingredients than some non-vegan cosmetics. The packaging usually lists all of the ingredients included in the product, making it easy to choose exactly what you want.

Vegan makeup is generally higher quality

Due to all natural ingredients used in the products, vegan makeup provides longer wear and easier application on the skin. Components infused with animal extracts usually irritate the skin, while herbal ones can soothe the skin.

Granted, vegan makeup and skincare can be more expensive than usual, but plenty of brands offer options for every budget. When shopping for makeup or skincare, remember that more expensive doesn’t necessarily mean better quality. The most important thing is that you feel comfortable with the products containing it and the effect you get after use.
